The largest snake ever known, Titanoboa, was discovered as a fossil in northeastern Colombia. Lachesis Muta, the South American Bushmaster, also called the South American Cobra and the Atlantic Cobra, is one of the world’s most feared, deadly, dangerous, venomous, unpredictable, and frightening snakes. The mysterious island is known as Ilha da Queimada Grande, and it is in fact so dangerous to set foot there that Brazil has made it illegal for anyone to visit. Bushmasters are light tan with brown to black diamond-shaped patterns. Much of the Pacific and Indian Oceans are warm enough to support sea snakes (virtually all of them venomous), so many of the islands in those areas have been colonized already. Six families (Aniliidae, Boidae, Colubridae, Elapidae, Tropidophiidae, Viperidae) are within the infraorder Alethinophidia (advanced snakes) and three families (Anomalepididae, Leptotyphlopidae, Typhlopidae) are within the infraorder Scolecophidia (blind snakes). Bushmasters are the largest of all South American venomous snakes and can reach 12 feet in length. The golden lancehead is an extremely venomous pit viper. Snake poachers try to get to the island to score a big payday on a new and rare snake. Snake Island is famously an isolated habitat with a lot of snakes and other animals. They prefer to swim to escape predators and prey, and swimming is their preferred mode. The golden lancehead exists on an island called Snake Island off the coast of Brazil.

Home to an estimated 4,000 venomous lancehead vipers, this is considered one of the worlds’ deadliest islands. The island is infested with snakes and is home to one of the deadliest snakes in the world, the golden lancehead viper. These reptiles have exceptional swimming abilities and can easily move through the water. Less than 100 miles away from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is Snake Island, or Ilha de Queimada Grande in Portuguese. Snakes in North and South America are known as rattlesnakes. These snakes spend most of their time hunting in wetlands and shallow lakes and ponds. Rattlesnakes are found in North and South America, but they are not found near the ocean. The largest yellow anacondas weigh over 100 pounds. Females grow bigger than males, reaching up to 15 feet long. The nearly 300 species of snake found in Colombia represent nine of the eighteen families. The yellow anaconda is one of the largest snakes in South America.
